Sustainability consultants Pure Strategies have put out a solid and important piece of research called "The Path to Product Sustainability".

From their research they draw two basic insights:

  1. Companies committed to product sustainability enjoy the benefits of manufacturing cost savings, brand enhancement, employee engagement and other important financial and organizational value.
  2. Top performing companies are doing things differently - they have a different level of commitment, internal information they generate, and integration of sustainability into core processes.

The Pure Strategies study was based on a survey with 100 global consumer product companies involved in product sustainability and in-depth interviews with heads, directors and managers of sustainability at companies implementing best practices, including RB, Coca-Cola, Henkel and Timberland.

This post in GreenBiz summarizes key findings.
